The furniture shop Made.com uses RFID/NFC technology as a USP to sell their furniture. The company has only two shops and I visited the Liverpool one to experience the exciting development first hand.
Their furniture is ultra modern as they collaborate with lots of edgy designers and the shop is presented a little like an art gallery, I really liked it.
I must admit I wasn’t interested in the furniture designs or becoming an ultra hip Dad if I’m honest. I was only there to see how they applied RFID technology to a business model to sell furniture.
Whilst I was browsing the furniture, a shop assistant handed me a tablet (only after warily eyeing me up, assessing whether I was seriously intending on buying something). She then instructed me to ‘scan’ the furniture to find the price. Surprisingly all furniture is only sold online and not in the shop. Using a tablet I scanned the lovely Danish inspired lamp that caught my eye, and it took me to purchase it online. Simple yet brilliant!
It’s very innovative approach to retail, stock management, theft, administration and so much more. I was fascinated to see how well the public took to using it too…..(they needed a bit of coaxing from what I could see, and were certainly confused as why staff didn’t know any prices).
It’s a very smart approach to retailing and a bonus to stop stock walking out the door; as there isn’t any such stock, its just a show room, every thing gets delivered to your address.
A fascinating development to how retailers can use RFID/NFC to cut costs in every aspect of their business. I wont be telling the kids I’ve visited Made.com or I might be accused of trying to become cool and I certainly wouldn’t want that would I?
