Tracking and tracing PPE assets to meet new directives meet

Managing New PPE Regulations

6th June 2019rfidNews, NFC

Changes and Updates

Recently, at European and UK level, directives (many over 20 years old) regarding PPE have been updated in order to meet changing standards, technologies and processes. All employers have duties concerning the provision and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at work – that is equipment that will protect the user against health or safety risks at work. However, the key priorities of these new regulations remain that manufacturers and importers of PPE products are responsible for meeting all safety standards in manufacture, but correct usage and systematic, professional maintenance is a direct duty of employers who deploy them.

Keeping an Inspection Log – Best practice?

Regular equipment inspections and keeping accurate log-files of these inspections – conforming to assessment procedures as regulated – is vital. Although, many Asset Managers register their operations filling out pre-printed inspection sheets by hand. This information is then sent to the office for further, future registration into the systems. There, important checks should be made and any errors or concerns highlighted. But paper work is both vulnerable and time consuming.

You could describe this method as typical case of double manual input of data or outdated? With many interpretation possibilities in hand written numbers and, in real time and location data – leaving room for potentially fraudulent or misinformation registration. The consequences of data mismanagement or error could be judged as rule-breaking and poor Health and Safety practice. Moreover, it could be a danger to life or limb.

There is a more efficient way to report – with an APP!

RFIDdirect has developed a system supporting these tasks and making the data capture and reporting so much easier. Just by using a NFC smart-phone and a NFC Asset-Tag as shown.

Download and Go

The NFC Mobile App supplied by RFIDdirect reads a pre-set and dedicated instruction set programmed into the NFC Asset-Tag. Activating the App installed on the phone, opening the relevant data capture page, automatically taking data from the phone itself – GPRS location, date and time – and adding this to the manual added data. The App will pre-set a memory bit in the NFC-Tag indicating to the user the status of the Asset. Closing the page by scanning the Asset-Tag again as confirmation or closing the App altogether will upload the data to a Cloud Application Manager. Users can download a simple App that identifies this pre-set bit in the NFC Asset-Tag and presents a colour on the screen. Red screen = do not use / Green screen = OK to use.

Simple to use, efficient in time management and accurate in the record-keeping of examination, maintenance and repair of PPE equipment. Another duty done well.
